THE  POWER  OF  PRAYER

“Prayer is not only worship; it is also an invisible  emanation of man’s worshipping spirit – the most powerful form of energy that one can generate .  The influence of prayer on man’s mind and body can be demonstrated as secreting glands can. Its results can be measured in terms of increased physical buoyancy, greater intellectual vigour, moral stamina and a deeper understanding of the realities underlying human relationships.

If you make a habit of sincere prayer, your life will be noticeably and profoundly altered.  Prayer stamps with its indelible mark our actions and our demeanour. A tranquility of bearing, a facial and bodily repose, are observed in those whose lives are thus enriched. Within the depths of consciousness , a flame kindles, and man sees himself. He discovers his selfishness, his silly pride, his greed, his blunders.  He develops a sense of moral obligation  and intellectual humility. Thus begins a journey of the soul towards the realm of grace.

Prayer is a force as real as the gravity of the earth. As a physician, I have seen men, after all other medical treatment had failed, lifted out of disease and the depths of sadness by that serene effort of prayer. It is the only power in the world that seems to overcome the so-called laws of nature. The occasions on which prayer has dramatically done this have been termed ‘miracles’. But a constant, quieter miracle takes place hourly in the hearts of men and women who have discovered that prayer supplies them with a steady flow of sustaining power in their daily lives. Only in prayer do we achieve that complete and harmonious assembly of body, mind and spirit, which gives the frail human reed its unshakable strength.

When we pray, we link ourselves with the inexhaustible motive power that spins the universe. We ask that a part of this power be appointed to our needs. Even in asking, our human deficiencies are filled and we arise from our prayer strengthened and repaired. The words ‘Ask and it shall be given to you’ have been verified by the experience of humanity.

How can prayer be defined? Prayer is the effort of man to reach God, to converse with the great invisible Being, Creator of all things, supreme wisdom, truth, love, beauty and power, the Father and Redeemer of every man.  We do know that whenever we address God in fervent prayer, we change both body and soul for the better. It could not happen that anyone could  pray fervently without some good result. The American philosopher Emerson said , “No one ever prayed without gaining something”. Even our slightest impulse toward prayer has a dynamic, beneficial effect on our lives.

We can pray anywhere – in the street, the subway, the shop, the office, in solitude or in a crowd. There is no prescribed posture, time or place , for God is everywhere.

Remember that in order to really mould personality, prayer must become a habit. It is meaningless to pray in the morning and to live like a barbarian the rest of the day. True prayer is a way of life; and the  truest life is literally a way of prayer.

Today, as never before, prayer is a binding necessity in the lives of men and nations. The lack of emphasis on the religious sense has brought the world to the edge of destruction. With most of us, our deepest source of power  and perfection has been left miserably undeveloped. Prayer, the basic exercise of the spirit (soul) , must be actively practised in our lives. For if the power of prayer is again released, there is yet hope that our prayer for a better world will be answered.”

                                                                                             ( Dr. Alexis Carrel, M.D. )

The Power Of Prayer: More Evidence

Clinical studies continue to show  prayer heals. Dr. Larry Dossey revealed the results of a second phase study at Duke University on the power of prayer.

The MANTRA project at Duke is headed by cardiologist Dr. Mitchell Krucokk and nurse practitioner, Susan Craven. The results show that heart patients who receive prayer have 50% to 100% fewer side effects than those patients not prayed for.

If patients agreed to be part of the study they were randomized and the “prayer” patients’ names went to prayer groups around the world. First names only were sent via e-mail to Buddhist groups in Nepal, Hindus in India and Jewish groups in Jerusalem. Catholic nuns, Unity Village Missouri and Protestants in North Carolina also participated.

The full report on the study will be published in an upcoming issue of the American Journal of Cardiology, according to Dossey. It will be the first time a heart journal has published a study on the effects of “distance” prayer.

Dossey also noted hundreds of other studies on the power of prayer that, until now, have been mostly ignored by the allopathic, or traditional medical  community. However, based on the Duke study Dossey concluded, “There’s no going back. This is a huge transition in medicine. Medicine will not be able to retreat from the impact.”

Markandeya Mantra / Maha-Mrityunjaya Mantra

Om Trayumbakam Yajamahe

Sughandhim Pushti Vardanam

Urvar-ukamiva Bandhanat

Mrityor Muksheeya Mamritat

“Shelter me, O three-eyed Lord Shiva.  Bless me with health and immortality and sever me from the clutches of death, even as a cucumber is cut from its creeper.”

Markandeya Mantra and Viral Infection

Connie already knew that she was sick when she kept her second  appointment with the doctor. Diagnosed with bronchial pneumonia, she thought the antibiotic was not doing the job after she had taken it for three weeks. She was right. A rare virus that had invaded her system was causing her to lose cartilage all over her body. She did not respond  to treatment for that condition. With an ashen face, the doctor told her she probably  had about six months to live.

Diving into the world of alternative therapies and treatments, Connie was determined to beat the virus. After six months of trying various cures with some encouraging results, she decided to apply  yet another offbeat therapy:  Sanskrit mantra. She chose the

Markandeya mantra or Maha-Mrityunjaya mantra. It is considered one of  the

most potent healing mantras in the world.

The classical form of the mantra discipline is meant to be performed by the person himself or herself. It is efficacious for relief of a wide variety of chronic illnesses, including immune system problems. Of course, it is no substitute for conventional medical care.

Connie repeated this mantra 108 times morning and evening for three months. She got  much better. Twelve months later she still said her Markandeya mantra every day while continuing to improve. After working with the mantra for four months, she even went horseback riding. Currently she is living an active and healthy life. She recently got married, and the virus has almost disappeared as of this writing, over a year after she was given six months to live.

A Critique on Microsoft Encarta's Description of Hinduism
http://www.sulekha.com/expressions/column.asp?cid=245733

CHENNAI, INDIA, September 24, 2003: The Hindu community has been looking at the way Hinduism is presented in Microsoft Corporation's free on-line Encarta Encyclopedia. The original Encarta article is http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761555715/Hinduism.html. Sanskrant Sanu outlines the different approach that Encarta takes when explaining Hinduism as opposed to the approach taken when explaining Islam and Christianity. Sanu explains, "Encarta is widely used as a reference source in American schools. In particular, because of its widespread use amongst children, we would expect Encarta's coverage of religions to be even-handed, sensitive and unprejudiced." He further adds, "Our interest is not in comparing the religions per se, but in understanding the differences in editorial choice -- both in the selection of content
as well as style, in the scholarly treatment of these religions in
Encarta."For full details on this long and insightful article, click on

Proof of God's Existence

 Back to Faith

The vast majority of atheists or people who think they are atheists, when asked why they don't believe in God, say that it is because they cannot see Him - yet if the question is put to them whether they believe in love, will say yes, and mean it. We believe in love yet how many of us have seen it?

Can it be held in one's hands? Can it be weighed? What colour is it? What shape is it? Can it be smelt? Or heard? "No", to all these questions. So how come that almost every man, woman and child alive believes in love, or at least knows what we're talking about when we mention the word "love"? Not only that, but few people would wish to contemplate living without love - without loving or being loved by someone. So, if it is possible to believe in unseen love, why is it impossible to believe in God even if we cannot see
Him? The same applies to goodness: we all know what goodness is - we love people who have goodness in them.

The same applies to all the other qualities like courage, generosity, joy, humility, compassion, mercy, kindness, self control, humour, wisdom, patience, etc... None of these are visible to the physical eye or any other physical sense. Yet we know they exist. We know also that human beings without these qualities would be impossible to live with. We feel them at work within ourselves and see them manifested in other people through their words, actions, facial expressions and speech. We fall in love with someone,
and when asked why we love that person we say things like . he's beautiful, good, kind, courageous, generous, honest . in short we fall in love with those abstract qualities.

Mao Zedong and God

Nurture Your Roots!

Mao Zedong in his memoirs wrote: "When I was a child, there was a beautiful garden near my mother's hut. The flowers in the garden were so colourful and beautiful that people would flock from far and near to see them. Then my
ageing mother fell ill. She did not worry so much about either her age or her illness. But she worried about what would happen to her garden".

Mao was young. He said to his mother: "Don't worry, mother, I will take good care of your garden."

True to his word, little Mao worked hard in the garden from dawn to dusk. A month later his mother got better and decided to come to her favourite place, the garden. She was shocked to see the poor condition of the place -
the garden was ruined. All the plants had dried up; the flowers had withered. Upset and saddened, she said to Mao: "You were in the garden the whole month. But the flowers are withered and all the plants are about to
die. What were you doing?"

Mao began to cry. He had worked so hard. He said to his mother: "I took great care. I used to kiss each flower; I would clean and wipe off the dust from each and every leaf - I really don't know what happened. I too was worried as the flowers kept withering away, the leaves became dry..." His mother started laughing. She said: "Don't you know, you silly boy, that the life of the flower is not in the flower and the life of the leaf is not in the leaf?"

The life of a plant is hidden in the roots beneath the ground. If the roots are not taken care of, the flowers and the leaves will die no matter how much you care for them. By taking care of the roots, the flowers will get nourished automatically.

Similarly, we serve our family, we serve our society, we serve our nation and if we don't find anything to serve, we serve dog, because our constitutional position is to serve, so if we start serving God, God is likened to the root of the tree, if we satisfy God, the whole tree [the whole creation, everything, everyone] will become happy, just like feeding
the stomach automatically supplies energy to other parts of the body.

God is that centre where drawing a circle will cover the entire creation, however if we make our centre to something else, then the circle will not cover everyone because the centre is misplaced and that's the reason, great-2 humanitarians are meat eaters. Universal brotherhood is possible only if we consider God as the Supreme Father of everyone. Unless we know this simple formula, no united nations can unite us.  All the godly qualities are automatically manifested in a person, who is in the service of God.

Low Health costs

Elderly people who practice the Transcendental Meditation technique may drastically reduce their medical costs, according to findings presented by faculty member Robert Herron at the 91st Annual Canadian Public Health Association Conference last month in Ottawa, Canada.

The study found that 163 people from Quebec - aged 65 and over - reduced payments to physicians by a cumulative 70 percent during the five-year period after they learned the Transcendental Meditation technique.

The retrospective study evaluated a sample of 326 Quebec health insurance enrolees - 163 who practiced the Transcendental Meditation technique and 163 who did not. Using statistical analysis, researchers compared the groups' expenses for treatment by physicians, both during the nine-year period before the Transcendental Meditation technique was introduced and for five years afterward. Data for the study was provided by the Regie de l'Assurance-Maladie du Quebec, the province's health insurance provider. Figures were adjusted for inflation using the Canadian government's Consumer Price Index.

The study's findings were dramatic. Researchers found 70 percent cumulative expenditure reduction for the group who practiced the Transcendental Meditation technique for five years. In contrast, the control group's expenses continued to rise. Both groups showed steadily rising payments to physicians during the nine-year period before the meditating group learned the Transcendental Meditation technique.

"These findings suggest that there is a relationship between the Transcendental Meditation technique and improved mental and physical health for senior citizens," said Dr. Herron, lead author of the study. "The proven health benefits of this preventive technique could have significant implications for the reduction of medical costs for people of all ages."

This research is an extension of previous studies of the effect of the Transcendental Meditation technique on aging. One study, for example, showed that a group of individuals who had been practicing the Transcendental Meditation program for more than five years were physiologically 12 years younger than their chronological age, based on a standard measure of "biological age" that evaluates blood pressure, near-point vision, and auditory discrimination.

The festival of Nagula Chavithi falls after the five days of Deepavali. It is specially observed by the women folk.

In the forest of Naimisha, Sootha Maharishi was teaching the value of uprightness and conformity to moral law to Shounaka and other Rishis. One day Shounaka told Sootha Maharishi that in the eyes of God all women are equal and, if so, he requested the latter to explain why certain women are barren without any children, some bear only few while some get more children.

Sootha Maharishi then, explained to Shounaka that some women knowingly or unknowingly commits sins like killing the birds and insects etc. According to the magnitude of their sins some are childless and some other beget children. He further added that some women carelessly throw the cloths used by them during their menstrual period which are carried away by the crows to keep in their nests which result in the decomposition of their eggs and foiling procreation. Without their knowledge they also kill ants and other insects during the course of cleaning their houses and while cooking. All these acts done unknowingly construed and add to the number of sins.

It is explained in Naga Prastishta Kalpam that snakes like "Chavithi Day" and on that day if the women soulfully pray and perform Naga Pratishta and feed them with milk they will get rid off the above sins and barren women beget children.

Therefore, the women folk who give credence to the above festival especially observe fast on Nagula Chavithi and after performing poojas to the anthills pour milk in them. Sri Subramanya Swamy, Sri Laxmana and Adisheshudu are the descendants of snakes and hence prayers and poojas are also offered to them.

Cobra is a poisonous snake. Death is certain when it bites. In the month of Aswijam (corresponding to English month of October) the male members go to their fields in the nights to keep a watch and protect the harvest from larency and theft where these reptiles move freely. Therefore the female members offer prayers to the cobras on the festival of Nagula Chavithi not to do any harm to their husbands, sons, sons-in-law etc.

During the festival days of Deepavali, no snake ventures out of their hiding places for fear of colorful lights and fire works. At the end of Deepavali they come out ferociously in search of food. In order to save from any eventuality to their family members women pour milk in the anthills so that no snake comes out of their hiding places and fatally bite.

Awakening the Buddha Within

When we don’t want to appear weak or vulnerable, we say things that make us look strong and powerful.  When we don’t want others to think we are out of control, we use words to control what others do.  It’s very easy to spot the manipulations of the spin-doctors from Madison Avenue; it’s more complex when we create our own egotistical advertising campaigns.  Yet this is what we do all the time by presenting ourselves as we would like to appear and hiding behind the stories we tell ourselves and others to get what we think we want.  All this only serves to create false personas that leave us feeling incomplete and alienated from our authentic selves.”

One day a lay man was able to meet God and he said
that I heard something about a devotee and I am going to tell You.

"Hold on a  minute," God replied. "Before
telling me anything I'd like you  to pass a little
test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?" "That's right," God continued.
"Before you talk to me about my devotee, it might be a
good idea to take a moment and filter what you're
going to say. That's why I call it the  triple filter
test.

The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely
sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"
"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it
and..."
"All right," said God "So you don't really know
if it's true  or not.

Now let's try the second filter, the filter of
Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my
friend  something good?"
"No, on the contrary..."
"So," God continued, "you want  to tell me
something bad about him, but you're not certain it's
true.  You may still pass the test though, because
there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is
what you want to tell me about my  friend going to be
useful to me?"
"No, not really."
"Well,"  concluded God, "if what you want to tell
me is neither true nor  good nor even useful, why tell
it to me at all?"

This is why God  is affectionate and  held all
His devotees in such high esteem.

The Glory of the Vedas
Permalink

The Glory of the Vedas from Hindu Dharma

The Vedas are eternal and the source of all creations and their greatness is to be known in many different ways. As I have already stated, their sound produces in our nadis as well as in the atmosphere vibrations that are salutary not only to our own Self but to the entire world. Here we must understand "lokaksema" or our welfare of the world to mean the good of mankind as well as of all other creatures. This concern for all creation that finds expression in the Vedas is not shared by any other religion.
"Sanno astu dvipadesancatuspade"-- this occurs in a mantra : the Vedas pray for the good of all creatures including bipeds, quadrupeds etc. Even grass, shrubs, trees, mountains and the rivers are not excluded from their benign purview. The happy state of all these sentient creatures and inert objects is brought about through the special quality of the Vedas.

The noble character of their sound apart, the Vedas are also notable for the lofty truths that find expression in the mantras. The tenets of these scriptures have aroused the wonder of the people of other lands, of other faiths. They are moved by the poetic beauty of the hymns, the subtle manner in which principles of social life are dealt with them, the metaphysical truths embedded and expounded in them, and the moral instruction as well as
scientific truths contained in them.

Not all mantras that create benign vibrations are necessarily meaningful. In this context we have the example of the music. The alapana of a raga(the elaboration of a musical mode)is "pure" sound, that is it has no words, but it is still is capable of producing emotions like joy, sorrow, etc. During the researches conducted by a university team, it was discovered that the vibrations created by the instrumental music quickened the growth of the plants and resulted in a higher yield. Here is a proof that the sound has the power of creation. Also to be noted is the fact that the  nstrumental music played to the plant does not obviously have any verbal contact--- this establishes that the sound has its own power.

The remarkable thing about the Vedas is that they are of  measurable value as much for their sound as for their verbal content. while the sound has its creative power, the words are notable for the exalted character of the meaning they convey.

There are Tamil hymns of a very high order. To read them is to be moved by them; they touch our hearts with their intense devotion. But we have  recourse only to a few of them for repeated incantation to expel a poison or to cure a disease. The authors of these hymns like Nakkirar, Arunagirinadhar and Sambandamurti have composed poems that are more moving and beautiful.
But the sound of the hymns chosen for repeated incantation are potent like mantras. Among our Acarya's works are the Saundaryalahari and the Sivanandalahari. the recitation of each stanza of the Saundaryalahari brings in a specific benefit. The same is not said about the Sivanandalahari. The reason is the special mantrik power(of the sound) of the former

There are mantras that are specially valuable for their sound but are otherwise meaningless. Similarly there are works pregnant with meaning but with no mantrik power. The glory of the Vedas is that they are a collection of mantras that are at once notable as much for the energising character of their sound as for the lofty truths they proclaim. a medicine, though bitter, does the body good, while some types of food, though delicious, do harm. Are we not delighted to have something like kusmanda-lehya which is
sweet to taste and is as the same time nourishing to the body? Similarly, the Vedas serve a twofold purpose: while they have the mantrik power to do immense good to each one of us and too the world, they also contain teachings embodying great metaphysical truths.

It must here be emphasised that on the doctrinal level the Vedas deal both with worldly life and the inner life of the Self. They teach how to conduct ourselves in such a manner as to create Atmic well-being. And their concern is not with the liberation of the individual alone; they speak about the ideals of social life and about the duties of the public. How the Brahmin ought to lead his life and how the king must rule his subjects and what ideals women are to follow: an answer to these-stated in the form of laws-is to be found in these scriptures. The Vedas indeed constitute the apex of our law-books.   KAMAKOTI.ORG

Purpose of Yajna
Permalink

The Threefold Purpose of Yajna from Hindu Dharma

The Vedic sacrifices have a threefold purposes. The first is to earn the blessings of the deities so that we as well as all other creatures may be happy in this world. The second is to ensure that, after our death, we will live happily in the world of the celestials. But our stay in devaloka, the celestial world, is not for all time. It will last only until such time as we exhaust the merit earned by us in this world. The joy known in the celestial world is also not full or entire unlike the bliss experienced by great devotees and jnanins. It is nowhere equal to the bliss of the Atman: which is also described as "experiencing" Isvara.

Sankara has stated in his Manisa-Pancaka that the joy that Indra knows is no more than a drop in the ocean of Atmananda or the bliss of Self-realisation. However, life in svarga, the paradise of the celestials, is a thousand times happier than life on earth with its unceasing sorrows. The second purpose of performing sacrifices is to earn residence in this paradise.

The third purpose is the most important and it is achieved by performing sacrifices, as taught by the Gita, without any expectation of reward. Here we desire neither happiness in this world nor residence in paradise. We perform sacrifices only because it is our duty to invoke the blessings of the gods for the welfare of the world. In this way our consciousness will be cleansed, a pre-requisite for enlightenment and final liberation. In other words the selfless performance of sacrifices means that we will eventually be dissolved in the Paramatman.

Sankara, who has expounded the ideals of Self-realisation and jnana, says: "Vedo nityam adhiyatam taduditam karma svanusthiyatam" (Chant the vedas every day. Perform with care the sacrifices and other rites they enjoin upon you). The Acarya wants us to conduct sacrifices not for happiness in this world, nor for the enjoyment of the pleasure of paradise. No, not for any petty rewards. Sankara exhorts us to carry out Vedic works without our hearts being vitiated by desire. This, according to his teaching, is the way to make our mind pure in order to realise the Self.

BHOJANA MANTRA - Spiritual Fasting

BHOJANA MANTRA
(SPIRITUAL FASTING)

Spiritual discipline is indispensable for the attainment of Self-knowledge. But the case of men of adament faith is different; they get at this knowledge very easily.

The Gopis returning home once found no boatman to ferry them across the river Yamuna to Brindavan. The perplexed milkmaids presented their plight to the sage Vyasa, who had also arrived there just then with the same intent. " Be not worried on this score; I shall lead you all to the other bank. But give me something first to appease my hunger," said the sage. Cream, butter and condensed milk were offered to him accordingly. After doing full justice to the dainties, Vyasa stood up and implored: " O Yamuna Devi, if it is a fact that I am fasting today, please stop flowing and make way for us to get to the other bank." The river did stop flowing and the group safely walked to the opposite side.

The Gopis then pleaded with the sage to explain the anomaly in his statement that he fasted while actually he feasted on the delicacies which they had supplied him. Vyasa explained himself: " The ceaseless hankering of my heart for Sri Krishna is my spiritual fasting. the idea 'I eat' is not allowed to enter the mind. Your dishes were all offered as oblation to the Maker presiding over this body." Maharishi Vyasa's life in conformity with Truth and his faith in the almighty worked this miracle.

Bondage and liberation are born of the attitude of the mind. He performs Yajna who engages himself in karma for the glory of God. Any amount of activities cause no harm to the man freed from attachment. All actions melt away as heaps of salt consigned into the sea get dissolved.

Consuming the daily food regularly is obligatory on all including the enlightened. But the latter converts eating itself into "Jnana-yajna". The food, the eater of it, the digestion- all these are mere modifications of Brahman. Herein lies the importance of Shloka 24, Chapter IV of Bhagavat Gita :

Brahmaarpanam Brahma havir
Brahmaagnau Brahmanaahutam
Brahmaiva tena gantavyam
Brahma-karma Samaadhinaa.

The oblation is Brahman, the clarified butter is Brahman, offered by Brahman in the fire of Brahman; unto Brahman verily he goes who cognizes Brahman alone in his action.

This is the Mantra we are supposed to recite before taking any food. We eat for the sake of Brahman residing in us. In practice,  it will serve as a 'Thanksgiving' to all those who are involved in the preparation of that food.

There is another Shloka, which also is used as Bhojana mantra sometimes.(Gita: Chapter XV, Shloka 14)

Aham Vaishvaanaro Bhootvaa

Praaninaam Dehamaa Ashritaha
Praanaa Paana Samaayuktah
Pachaamyannam Chaturvidham

Becoming the life-fire in the bodies of living beings, as Vaisvanara, mingling with the upward and downward breaths, I digest the four kinds of food.

That energy is known as Vaisvanara, which remains in the bodies of beings as warmth and aids the digestion of food. This energy is also known as 'Jataraagni', the gastric fire. Food is partaken of in 4 different ways- masticating, sucking, licking and swallowing- basing on the nature and form of food.

Sublimation of the senses is the sacrifice that certain aspirants perform devoutly. Sacrifice, therefore, of the self by the self is to dedicate oneself to Ishwara. This solemn act is verily Jnana yajna. There are 2 diametrically opposite Yajnas: The function of the one is to make the senses ineffective and that of the other to make them super-effective.

Fire which transforms the nature of things consigned into it is the medium in ritualistic yajna and symbol in jnana-yajna. The fire of restraint carried to its extreme becomes total sense-control. The performer of this form of yajna eats wholesome food merely for the nourishment of the body. The act of relishing and the idea of enjoying a meal are all eliminated. The other senses are suspended except for the bare maintenance of the body. The mind is completely withdrawn from the senses and made introvertive. The physical life goes on mechanically while the mind revels in the Self within.

In the second type of yajna the senses are made best use of for the adoration of the Almighty. In the fire of senses, the sense-objects are offered as oblation. Forms perceived by the eyes are beheld as the manifestations of the Lord. Auspicious utterances are sumptuously heard. Sacramental food is partaken of with piety. The smelling of the aroma, associated with the worship of the Divine, is felt as a form of holy communion. Garlands of flowers and sandal paste, that comes as grace from the adored Deity, are reverently put on the body. The objects of all the 5 senses are thus sanctified and made liberal use of. The sensual is in this way transformed into the spiritual.

Of the two methods, that of the sense-control is negative and sense-sublimation positive. Though they seem antithetical to each other, the result produced by them is the same- purification of the mind. The negative method is given to the daring and advanced few, and the positive one to the aspiring many.

The Celestials and Mortals Help Each Other from Hindu Dharma

The sacrifices, you will have seen, are of the utmost importance to our Vedic religion. The Lord himself has spoken about them in the Gita. When Brahma created the human species he also brought the yajnas or sacrifices into existence, bidding mortals thus: "Keep performing sacrifices. You will obtain all good fortune. May these sacrifices of yours be the cow (Kamadhenu) that grants you all you desire"

Saha-yajnah prajah srstva puro'vaca Prajapatih

Anena prasavisyadhvam esa vo'stvista-kamadhuk

If we assume that Brahma "created humans and with them sacrifices", it is likely to be construed that he first created human beings and then sacrifices. But actually it is stated in the Gita that Prajapati created yajna along with humankind (saha-yajnah prajah srstva). Yajna is mentioned first and then praja (mankind).

Since the mantras of the Vedas are the source of creation, the vibrations produced by chanting them will bring the divine powers invested with the authority of performing certain functions. To recite such mantras at a sacrifice is like writing the address on an envelope. It is by performing homa in this way that the oblation is conveyed to the deity invoked by Agni.

The dog is stronger than the cat, the horse stronger than the dog, the elephant stronger than the horse, and the lion stronger than the elephant. To extend this sequence, who are stronger than men? The devas, or celestials. While in this world they remain dissolved in the five elements, in the celestial world they exist in a visible form. Those who have obtained siddhi or perfection by chanting the mantras can also see them in their gross form in their celestial abode besides receiving their blessings in their subtle form. The gods emanated from the Paramatman as a result of the vibrations produced by the mantras. We may therefore describe the mantras as the "sonic" form of the deities.

The deity appears during a sacrifice when he is invoked with mantras. Those who are wise and mature will perceive them with their eyes. Even if they do not, the power of the deities will be subtly revealed to them. However, offerings cannot be made directly to them. When you write a letter you have to stick a stamp on it or put the seal of the registrar. According to the "regulations" of the Vedas, any oblation intended for the celestials must be offered in the sacred fire in a form acceptable to them.

What remains after the sacrificial fire has consumed the offering ("yajnasista") is taken as prasada by the performers of the sacrifice. The question is asked: how does the same reach the deities invoked? We should not entertain such doubts. The deities are not like us created of the five elements. So they do not require food in the gross form. Even in our case the food we eat is burned (digested) by the gastric fire. Its essence alone is conveyed to all parts of the body in the form of blood. The subtle essence of the offerings are conveyed by the sacrificial fire to the deities invoked.

You know how a toast is proposed to the guest of honour at a dinner or banquet. The host and invitees drink to his health. This means that, when a group of people drink or eat ceremonially, the benefit goes to someone else. Do you ask how this is possible? Such things can be explained only on the basis of a certain mental attitude. Good intentions and good thoughts have their own creative power.

When the thought waves of the Paramatman have come to us in the form of mantras, they must truly be pregnant with the utmost power for good. The offerings made to the deities with the chanting of mantras will increase their strength. The celestials are of course strong but they are neither almighty nor full. They too have their wants and desires and these are met by the sacrifices performed by us. If they help us by making our mundane existence happier we have to help them by performing sacrifices. If we conduct yajnas so that they may flourish, they will in return bless us with well-being. Sri Krsna says in the Gita:

Devan bhavayata'nena te deva bhavayantu vah

Parasparam bhavayantah sreyah param avapsyatha

Our religious texts are replete with accounts of how people have merited the grace of Isvara and pleased the celestials by performing sacrifices.

If the celestials bring us rains, bless us with food, health, etc, why should we perform sacrifices so as to provide them with food, we are asked. " Why should we feed the deities when we ourselves are dependent on them for our food and clothing? Why cannot they manage to obtain food on their own? How would you explain the Lord's statement (in the verse quoted above), 'Parasparam bhavayantah'? To say that we must regard the celestials as great beings and make obeisance to them seems reasonable enough. So let us worship them. But, instead of this, why are we seemingly elevated and placed on an equal footing with them? What is the meaning of our being told: 'You sustain them and let them sustain you - you feed them by performing sacrifices and let them bless you with rains'? "

When I consider such questions, it seems to me that the world of the celestials is like England and that they themselves are like Englishmen. Is there much agricultural land in England? No. Yet Englishmen lorded it over the world. They boasted: "The sun never sets on our empire. " What was the secret of their world dominance?

England is poor in food resources. It has plenty of coal and chalk - coal that is black and chalk that is white. These are the main resources of Englishmen but they cannot eat them. If machines and factories are to be installed in countries where food crops are grown in plenty, they will need a lot of coal and chalk. That coal is essential to industry is well known. (Petrol and electricity came later. Now there is atomic power also. ) For some industries like cement, chalk (limestone) is essential.

Englishmen thought up a shrewd plan. They induced other countries to start factories using machinery and fomented new, unnecessary desires among people there. And they sold lumps of coal and chalk to these countries and got in return foodgrains, cotton, etc, in abundance. In this way they brought country after country under their heel.

There are no agricultural lands in the celestial world. The vedas have no means to feed themselves. "Durbhiksam devalokesu manunam udakam grhe", so it is said in the first prasna (first part) of the Taittiriya Aranyaka. Rain is produced when the clouds precipitate. It is only on earth that rain can be made use of - it fills the rivers, lakes and wells. The celestials have to come to our households for water. On earth alone there is plenty because of cultivation carried on by irrigating the fields. There is famine in the celestial world since it has no agricultural land: this is the meaning of the words quoted from the Aranyaka.

However, we need the grace of the gods if we are to be blessed with rains. To deserve such grace we must perform sacrifices. Otherwise there will be no rains on earth. The result will be famine or the rain will fall into the sea and not on land, or it will be either ativrsti (too much rain) or anavrsti (no rain). We have to depend on the denizens of the celestial world to send us the right quantity of rain to create abundance on this planet.

Just as England has plenty of coal but does not have sufficient agricultural land, the celestials have an abundance of grace but no crops to grow - they cannot also sustain themselves with their power of grace. Because they send us rain we are able to raise crops and sustain ourselves. For our part we can enhance their power of grace by chanting the Vedas. The oblations offered in the sacrificial fire with such chanting become their nourishment.

Our country grows cotton. When our spinning mills did not prosper, the English took our cotton to Lancashire, made "nice" cloth and sold it to us, making in the process four times profit. The celestials produce rain for us from the water vapour formed from our own seas. But, unlike the English, they do not make any profit out of it (in the transaction). In fact the blessings they give us are far more than the sustenance we give them. As I said earlier, the celestials are much stronger than we are. The Lord has assigned us the duty of performing various rites and the celestials have to find satisfaction in them. By doing so, it seems, he has raised us to the level of the celestials. "Parasparam bhavayantah" he says in the Gita. The gods and mortals support each other.

By good company, attain detachment (from material desire).
By detachment, attain freedom from delusion.
By freedom from delusion, attain a steady mind.
By a steady mind, attain freedom from bondage.

You can have sense control only when you join Sathsang (good company). 'Sath' is that which is permanent. In this world, everything is transitory. Only Divinity is permanent. Your feelings will become noble and immortal only when you associate yourself with God. First and foremost recognize the fact that bad company is the root cause for man's downfall. Man wants to
accomplish various tasks, but is inhibited by the sense of fear lurking in his mind. It is only the association with God that will make man fearless.
Every flower that blossoms will not grow into a fruit. Every fruit that the tree bears will not become ripe. But every ripened fruit is bound to fall down from the tree. The same thing can be said of human life too. Man develops desires and indulges in malpractices which will ultimately lead to his downfall. Man has invented various wonderful gadgets, which can even take him to the moon, but the most wonderful and mysterious of all machines is the human body itself, which is  God's creation. God has created this machine not merely for eating, drinking and making merry. All these are common for animals also. This being the case, what is so unique about human birth?

Just as a stone, a tree, a straw, grain, a mat, a cloth, a pot, and so on, when burned, are reduced to earth (from which they came), so the body and its sense organs, on being burned in the fire of Knowledge, become Knowledge and are absorbed in Brahman, like darkness in the light of the sun.

Numerology is the ancient and revealing science of numbers. Each number is a symbol for an energy force that has distinct traits. Numerology is a study of the numbers to which an individual most strongly responds, and the interrelationship of these numbers. Your name and birth date is a code for your life. Generally, numerologists deal with single digit numbers, by reducing (adding together) the numbers to a single digit.

Life Cycle Numbers

1 = Independent, ambitious, leader, initiator, protector
2 = Negotiator, peace-maker, romantic, nostalgic, behind the scenes
3 = Communicator, social, entertainer, writer, speaker, booster, joyous
4 = organizer, worker, fair judge, pillar of community, rigid, provider, physical
5 = Free spirit, explorer, traveler, talented, salesman
6 = Responsible, caring. compassionate, doctor, counselor, decorator, cosmic parent
7 = Seeker, analyzer, problem solver, different, introspective, observer
8 = Manager, businessman, leader, ambitious, desires the finest, status seeking
9 = Humanitarian, social mover, idealist, perfectionist, completion emotional

Master Numbers

Master level energy is designated by double digit numbers. Each master number provides its own form of service to mankind. People with master level energy are highly developed souls, who are on the earth plane to raise the level of humanity. They have unlimited potential. Should they use this power for selfish ends, or should they become egotistical, this same power would be destructive to them.

With increased development in our evolution, more of these double digit numbers will gain master level intensity. At the current stage, 11, 22, and 33 have become master numbers. 44 is filling to that level, and is beginning to show master energy characteristics. The ultimate fulfillment will be when all the double digit numbers have achieved master level power. No one can live totally on the master level of intensity. The reduced number must therefore also be considered. Most master level people take many years of growing to assimilate this energy and put it to appropriate use. In their early life, the potential is evident, but often limited in its use.

11/2 The Master Philosopher:

The eleven is to provide illumination to mankind. A person with this energy has much inner wisdom and a charisma that draws others to them. They are high level teachers and counselors. They are on an inner directed mission. Their psychic abilities are highly developed.
22/4 The Master Builder:

The 22 will build a tangible evidence on a grand scale of his or her life. This is the energy of world leaders, CEO's of multinational corporations and founders of major medical or educational institutions. It is their dream that brings together the necessary people and resources to create the reality.
33/6 The Master Teacher:

The 33 has a need to communicate the knowledge of the ages. If they do not share this inner depth they will stagnate or turn negative. They find original ways to encourage learning. The 33 often teaches through the arts or medicine. They are in the forefront of the search for truth.
44/8 The Master Manager:

As the 44 learns to synthesize the physical plane with the higher realms, he or she becomes the conscious bridge between these worlds. The 44 will learn to be a creator, able to manifest at will whatever is held in desire.

TRUE KNOWLEDGE

Abstract space and eternity are indivisible; and therefore to try  to fix time and place, as though they were absolute realities, is   neither metaphysical nor philosophical. However, an objective   standpoint is essential, as has been already pointed out. In the   economy of Nature, everything is right in its place, and to ignore a certain plane is just as illogical as to over-estimate it. True knowledge consists in a right sense of discrimination: to be able to
perceive what phenomenon performs what function, and how to utilize it for human progress and happiness. Both the objective and subjective standpoints, as much as the inductive and deductive methods, are therefore essential for the attainment of true knowledge which is true power.
