This month's Home Page features resources on Yoga and Sports. Many use yoga as a way to build strength and flexibility as well as prevent injury in their sport.
"Yoga is designed to heal injuries, it’s a therapeutic system. I’m convinced that almost all sports injuries result from muscular imbalance, from some muscles getting tighter and tighter and other muscles not being used and getting weaker. Yoga increases range of motion and strength as well as concentration and awareness ... "

Yoga for Your Back and Much More

The main focus of this article is the benefits of Yoga, and primarily those benefits for your back. However, such a limited approach would be a great disservice to you, and disrespect to the great teachers who have handed down to us this wonderful and sacred discipline from over two thousand years ago. The value of Yoga is much, much greater than what it can do for your back, just as your true value is much greater than that of your back, or of any other part, for that matter! Nevertheless, I will start with your back. That is a good place to start, for your back is your primary support, and without a healthy back, your journey - whether it be to your office, a vacation spot, or your spiritual awakening - will be much more difficult and troublesome.

Depression And Our Forgotten Magnificence

Because yoga has the potential to treat the whole person, the road to recovery from depression may very well be finding the balance of medication, talk therapy, and yoga that works for you. There are, to be sure, some yoga masters who, like Western medicine, address the symptoms, advocating a specific practice for depression, which keeps the introspection to a minimum. But I prefer a "the only way out is through" approach for most of us who are grieving or who suffer from dysthymia. In the tradition in which I've received my primary training, the yoga mat itself becomes the place you show up with your whole self-your grieving self if you're grieving, your angry self if you're angry. And the practice itself brings the emotional body back into balance.

When you go to this place, limitations which all of us accept cease to exist. They are not even entertained as a possibility. This is a place called perfect health."
