This month's Home Page features resources on Yoga and Sports. Many use yoga as a way to build strength and flexibility as well as prevent injury in their sport.

The main focus of this article is the benefits of Yoga, and primarily those benefits for your back. However, such a limited approach would be a great disservice to you, and disrespect to the great teachers who have handed down to us this wonderful and sacred discipline from over two thousand years ago. The value of Yoga is much, much greater than what it can do for your back, just as your true value is much greater than that of your back, or of any other part, for that matter! Nevertheless, I will start with your back. That is a good place to start, for your back is your primary support, and without a healthy back, your journey - whether it be to your office, a vacation spot, or your spiritual awakening - will be much more difficult and troublesome.
Because yoga has the potential to treat the whole person, the road to recovery from depression may very well be finding the balance of medication, talk therapy, and yoga that works for you. There are, to be sure, some yoga masters who, like Western medicine, address the symptoms, advocating a specific practice for depression, which keeps the introspection to a minimum. But I prefer a "the only way out is through" approach for most of us who are grieving or who suffer from dysthymia. In the tradition in which I've received my primary training, the yoga mat itself becomes the place you show up with your whole self-your grieving self if you're grieving, your angry self if you're angry. And the practice itself brings the emotional body back into balance.

Quote of the Month
In the words of Deepak Chopra (now on the Yoga.com Advisory Board): "There exists in every person a place that is free from disease, that never feels pain, that cannot age or die. When you go to this place, limitations which all of us accept cease to exist. They are not even entertained as a possibility. This is a place called perfect health." ~Deepak Chopra (now on the Yoga.com Advisory Board)
Acknowledged as one of the world's greatest leaders in the field of mind body medicine, Deepak Chopra, M.D. continues to transform our understanding of the meaning of health. Chopra is known as the prolific author of more than 35 books. One of his latest books is The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga which has just been published.
Through The Chopra Center which he founded, Dr. Chopra is revolutionizing common wisdom about the crucial connection between body, mind, spirit and healing. His mission of "bridging the technological miracles of the west with the wisdom of the east."
Next month, in this newsletter, we feature a column by Dr. Chopra on the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga. We welcome Dr. Chopra to our advisory board at Yoga.com.
